Neuroscience Center
Bozeman Health Neuroscience Center provides patients with one clinic for
treatment of the multiple aspects of neurological disorders and diseases.
The Neuroscience Center, which combines the specialties of Neurology, Clinical
Neuropsychology and Physiatry, is a multidisciplinary group of physicians
and specialists who focus on brain and nervous system injuries and illnesses.
Because care provided through each discipline is directly connected to
the others, the single clinic allows physicians at Bozeman Health Neuroscience
Center to complement and broaden each patient’s healthcare options
while providing a continuum of care.
In an age of rapid advancements in the understanding of the brain, neuroplasticity
and mind-body medicine approaches to healing, our Neuroscience providers
make use of evidence-based medical knowledge, techniques and treatments
to benefit their patients. Our providers combine both time-tested and
cutting-edge medical knowledge and treatments to provide optimal care
and improvement of functioning.
Effective treatment starts with accurate medical diagnosis, such as for
multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, dementia or ADHD. Following a stroke, a
patient may benefit from coordinated medical treatments from Neurology,
evaluation of cognitive functioning by Neuropsychology, and functional
improvements or compensations aided by Bozeman Health Physical Medicine
and Rehabilitation (also known as Physiatry).
Components
Neurology is a specialty for treatment of disorders of the nervous system, focusing
on the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. Since the nervous system
is responsible for controlling all voluntary and most automatic functions
of the human body, neurological disorders can manifest in a variety of
different ways. Our neurologists diagnose and treat neurological symptoms
and disorders including headaches, dementia, numbness or weakness in limbs,
dizziness, epilepsy and other non-related seizures, stroke and multiple
sclerosis.
Clinical Neuropsychology focuses on brain functioning and brain-behavior relationships. A clinical
neuropsychologist is a licensed psychologist with expertise in how behavior,
emotions and thinking abilities are related to brain structures and systems.
A neuropsychological evaluation involves analysis of a patient’s
history of any cognitive, emotional or behavioral problems, in combination
with related objective testing and questionnaires. This aids in neuropsychiatric
diagnosis and planning for medical treatment and rehabilitation. A clinical
neuropsychologist also conducts psychological evaluations of such elements
as personality or psychiatric diagnosis to aid in treatment planning and
mental health intervention.
Physiatry focuses on advancing the function and quality of life in individuals with
chronic disease. Conditions ranging from spinal cord injury, stroke, brain
injury, and neurodegenerative diseases to chronic medical issues, cancer
and chronic pain can be supported by a functional evaluation. A traditional
medical approach of case review and attention to details impacting daily
functional life is the cornerstone of Physiatry. Dr. Todd has advanced
training in Mind-Body medicine, which considers emotional, mental, social,
environmental and spiritual factors that impact an individual’s
overall health. Tools such as biofeedback, imagery, mindfulness, meditation,
art and movement are employed to empower individuals to support their
bodies’ restorative mechanisms and maximize their quality of life.
