Contact: Lauren Brendel, M.S.
The Bozeman Health system board shares that Bozeman Health president and CEO John Hill is stepping down from his position.
"The board of directors and I have mutually agreed that I will end my tenure as CEO of Bozeman Health at the end of this month,” shared John Hill. “I have the highest regard and respect for our board of directors, my executive and leadership colleagues, and the entire Bozeman Health team. They have my admiration and ongoing support as they navigate these unprecedented and complex challenges in the healthcare industry.”
As president and CEO, John helped lead Bozeman Health in becoming an integrated healthcare delivery system, and he leaves the organization better equipped to support the care needs of our growing community. This included improving patient access to care through an expansion of community and retail health care sites, opening the first NICU in Southwest Montana, expanding our critical care capabilities, and working with independent orthopedic groups to create Montana’s only DNV accredited Spine + Joint Institute.
The board, in their governance role and responsibility of overseeing the president and CEO for Bozeman Health, has selected Dr. Kathryn Bertany to serve as interim president and CEO starting November 1, 2022.
Dr. Bertany has 30 years of experience practicing medicine as a pediatrician and nearly 20 years of experience in hospital/health system leadership roles. Dr. Bertany received her undergraduate and doctorate degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Most recently, she served as Bozeman Health’s president of Bozeman Health Deaconess Hospital and Bozeman Health Big Sky Medical Center. Prior to joining Bozeman Health, Dr. Bertany was the vice president of medical affairs at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, Oregon, coming from Valley Medical Center—part of the University of Washington Medicine system in Seattle, Washington—where she was the chief medical officer. She also served as administrator and executive medical director for St. Luke's Children's Hospital in Boise, Idaho.
Bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her new interim role, Dr. Bertany understands the issues and pressures facing our local health care system that other health systems are also facing nationally. We are confident that Dr. Bertany will work to improve trust throughout the health system and that our Bozeman Health community will support her in this interim period.
Dr. Bertany shares, “I am honored to serve as interim CEO, supporting our teams at Bozeman Health in achieving their goals of providing the best care to patients and their families.”
Additionally, the system board of directors met with a group of physicians on October 20, 2022. All are committed to ensuring a collaborative approach forward for the benefit of all employees, clinicians, nurses, care teams and most importantly, our patients and community.
The board will immediately begin a national search for a permanent CEO of Bozeman Health.
Our local, independent health care system remains committed to providing high quality, safe, and accessible care, and our dedication to supporting our teams during this transition is unwavering.
